Finding the Happiness You’ve Been Looking For
Philippians 2:16 (NLT)
16 Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.
Happiness is not discovered by chasing better circumstances; it is discovered by holding firmly to God’s Word and allowing His truth to shape how we think and live.
We spend a lot of time searching for happiness. We look for it in money, relationships, success, possessions, entertainment, and circumstances. We tell ourselves, “When this happens, then I’ll be happy.” But Scripture teaches us that happiness is not ultimately found in what happens around us; it is found in what God is doing within us through His Word. Paul says in Philippians 2:16, “Hold firmly to the word of life.” That phrase gives us the foundation for discovering genuine joy. When life becomes uncertain, hold tightly to what is certain, and that’s God’s Word.
I. CHANGE WHAT YOU THINK
Worry is meditation directed in the wrong direction. When you worry, you take a negative thought and replay it repeatedly. You think about what could happen, what might go wrong, and what you cannot control. The more you rehearse the worry, the larger it becomes. All the while, biblical meditation changes the focus.
Instead of repeatedly rehearsing your fears, begin repeatedly rehearsing God’s truth.
Your mind will meditate on something. The question is not whether you will think deeply about something; the question is what will occupy your thoughts.
II. STRENGTHEN YOUR GRIP
Paul tells believers to “hold firmly” to the Word of life. You develop that grip through consistent exposure to Scripture. Hear it, read it, study it, memorize it, meditate on it, and apply it.
Hearing the Word gives you exposure. Reading it gives you familiarity. Studying it gives you understanding. Memorizing it puts it in your heart. Meditation allows you to rehearse its truth. Application turns truth into transformation. The stronger your grip on God’s Word, the harder it becomes for life’s circumstances to pull you away from God’s truth.
